Lesson script

Hand position matters. Cynthia says: arch your palms as if you are hugging a mango, then gently put your fingertips on the keys. Play with the tips, not flat fingers.

Finger numbers on the keyboard:
1 = thumb · 2 = pointer · 3 = middle · 4 = ring · 5 = pinky

Same numbers on both hands. Thumb is always 1.

Exercise: hold a soft “mango” shape. Tap 1-2-3-4-5 slowly on any five white keys. Say the numbers out loud. Switch hands.

Done when: both hands can tap 1–5 in order while saying the numbers.

Instrument paths

  • Piano: Five neighboring white keys; fingertips; no force.
  • Strings: Pizzicato one finger at a time on an open string while saying 1–5.
  • Percussion: Tap finger numbers on a pillow or hand drum rim.

Learning modes

  • Solo child: Child alone: left hand then right hand 1–5, saying numbers.
  • Child + parent: Parent places one finger at a time with the child (“mango check”).
  • Family: Family: one calls numbers, others tap; swap callers.
