Welcome to the piano. Cynthia likes to say music teaches us the universe is in order and designed for harmony.

Pythagoras noticed different hammer sizes made harmonic tones. Plato helped give us the do–re–mi scale. You do not need the whole history today. You need one idea: tones are like colors. Beautiful music is to the ear what a rainbow is to the eye.

Drama lives in the space between the notes — happy, sad, love, beauty.

Today: sit tall. Place hands gently on white keys. Listen once while I play three soft notes with silence between them. Then you echo.

Done when: you can name one feeling you heard in the silence.

Instrument paths

  • Piano: Any three white keys near middle; pedal optional; long rests.
  • Strings: Open-string pizzicato echoes of the same three pitches if available.
  • Percussion: Soft body-pulse on chest or lap — only in the rests.

Learning modes

  • Solo child: Child sits alone, plays three notes with long rests, and names the mood.
  • Child + parent: Parent models three notes + silence first, then trades turns.
  • Family: One person plays tones, one keeps a soft heartbeat pulse, one names the color/mood.
