Inversions are like shades of the same color. C major is always C–E–G notes: • Root: C–E–G (C in the bass) • 1st: E–G–C (E / the 3rd in the bass) • 2nd: G–C–E (G / the 5th in the bass) Say note names out loud as you shift. Small finger shifts beat big jumps. Done when: you can play all three C inversions and say which note is on the bottom.
Instrument paths
- Piano: RH inversions close position; speak bass note.
- Strings: Bass note only on a low string while piano shows the shade.
- Percussion: Change shaker color subtly with each inversion.
Learning modes
- Solo child: Child cycles root → 1st → 2nd → root.
- Child + parent: Parent asks “what’s in the bass?” after each shape.
- Family: One holds a C drone; one changes inversions above.
